Chief Tom Synan with the Newtown Police Department presented at our club meeting sharing his story of how he first became active in the addiction epidemic when an entire family in his city died from drug overdoses. His efforts to help make a difference created a statewide coalition focusing on providing treatment, not jail time, for addicts. This group created partnerships which took harm reduction to the addicts. Recent data collection indicates a decrease in addiction deaths due to this unique approach which includes needle exchanges and making Narcan available to the general public.
