There are now two Interact Chapters sponsored by Cincinnati Eastside Rotary.
- West Clermont High School – 1 year complete, 20 students, Linda Mehaus Advisor
- Turpin High School – new this year
Each Interact Chapter is being challenged to plan and host one community-based or school-based service project. They will present to us and then lead, plan, promote, execute and report back to us. We’re planning a competition between the two high schools.
We can help by connecting students, teachers, and school leaders. We also need someone in our club who is passionate about developing the next generation of leaders and rotarians to help work with the program.

Clean water is a basic need for human beings. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, they live healthier and more productive lives. However, at least 3,000 children die each day from diseases caused by unsafe water, which is what motivates our members to build wells, install rainwater harvesting systems, and teach community members how to maintain new infrastructure. Please give generously and click here to learn more.

6) Happy Bucks – Rotary International Clean Water Project
Clean water is a basic need for human beings. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, they live healthier and more productive lives. However, at least 3,000 children die each day from diseases caused by unsafe water, which is what motivates our members to build wells, install rainwater harvesting systems, and teach community members how to maintain new infrastructure. Please give generously and click here to learn more.

Approximately 1,600 children will die each year from their injuries – more than 75% of those victims under the age of four. Equally troubling is that the majority of abusers are parents. The “Stopping the Abuse Before it Ever Starts” initiative seeks to educate high school-age students about the realities of abuse and the responsibilities of parenting to put an end to these needless acts. It is led by two of our own Rotarians, Mary Eisnaugle and Gail Koford.

Dare 2 Stand Up identifies a technology of examining behavior, motivation, perception and communication that leads to conclusive action. Sam integrates her extensive variety of professional certifications into plain-English practices, and she shows you steps to peaceful and compassionate confrontation backed by her lifetime of experience as a teacher, volunteer administrator, coach, and consultant.

The hospice philosophy is one of caring for patients whose medical conditions are not responding to treatment or for patients who choose not to seek aggressive medical care for their conditions. It is a program for patients who are considered terminal and are expected to live for six months or less if the disease follows its natural course… although many patients outlive this time frame.
The hospice philosophy focuses on comfort care, not curative care. The goal of this care is for the patient to be as comfortable and pain-free as possible while receiving emotional, psychological and spiritual support if the patient and/or family members choose to avail themselves of these types of services.

8) Guest speaker Craig Dunaway – president, Penn Station East Coast Subs.
Penn Station’s origins can be traced back to Jeff Osterfeld’s first venture in 1983 as owner/operator of “Jeffrey’s Delicatessen” in the Dayton Mall in Dayton, Ohio. It was here that the roots of the “ownership mentality” began to form for the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Penn Station, Inc. Jeff saw first-hand the impact his presence in the store had on product quality, customer service and sales. On a trip to Philadelphia and other parts of the East Coast of the United States to research the East Coast version of the submarine sandwich, Jeff was particularly attracted by the popularity of the cheesesteak sandwich. This trip prompted an addition to the deli’s menu of a variation of the Philadelphia cheesesteak sandwich he had sampled on the south side of Philly. This sandwich became an instant hit with customers.
Jeff took his innovative ideas on quick service dining to downtown Cincinnati where he opened his first Penn Station® Restaurant in 1985. The original menu had four sandwiches and featured the grilled cheesesteak, fresh-cut french fries and hand-squeezed lemonade, with the order prepared directly in front of the customers using the freshest ingredients available. In 1988, Jeff’s vision for an upscale, quick -service dining experience revolving around “fresh ingredients and display cooking” was formulated into a franchising concept. This began the evolution into what is now an extraordinarily successful concept that has grown to over 275 restaurants.
Mr. Dunaway has joined Penn Station in 1997 as a franchisee and assumed the position of president in 1999.

Daren Donohoo invited member Scott Gaviglia, Interim Chief of Police, Union Township, to discuss a recent high profile drug raid at the Piccadilly Square apartment complex off of Beechmont Ave. in Union Township.
Chief Gaviglia provided a brief history of the apartment complex which has been the source of known drug activity, complaints and other crime since mid 2000s. A previous investigation was conducted with involvement by the FBI approximately one year ago that fell short of producing indictments. A recent four month investigation by the Union Township Police Department and other agencies concluded with 39 secret indictments and 141 charges.
A raid was conducted on a Tuesday morning to serve indictments which resulted in 23 arrests. Additionally, drugs and weapons were recovered. Chief Gaviglia believes there was a significant disruption in drug activity at the complex given the number of arrests an recent rash of drug overdoes calls which often come as a result of drugs being purchased from unknowns sources.
Chief Gaviglia offered a thanks to Clermont County Sherriff Tim Rodenberg for his agency’s assistance as well as to Clermont County Prosecutor Vince Ferris.

Greg Kling with Assisting Hands Home Care spoke about the services his business offers and general non-medical health care in the US.
Assisting Hands is a national franchise, which stared 20 years ago and currently has 60 offices in 6 states. Greg discovered the need for in-home personal care after dealing with the experience of his mother-in-law’s terminal illness and the struggle it placed on his family. Founded in 2013, he serves all of Cincinnati with a leadership team of 5 and 90 caregivers. The mission of Assisting Hands is to “relieve the stress of Care so that you can be the son or daughter that you want to be…” They offer numerous services based on the patients’ needs. They will help set up a person’s home so the family member can continue to live there, aid in physical and occupational therapy, coordinate outings, help in emergency or urgent needs, and offer friendship and companionship. Their commitment is a 2 hour phone response time and an 8 hour response time to get a care giver in place. The need for non-medical in-home care is growing. Projections show the number of 65 year olds will double by 2030 to more than 70 million, while state spending decreases.
